Wait to Swim After Wet Weather

Bacteria levels in local waterways

With upcoming rain, please be reminded that bacteria levels in local waterways are typically elevated during and shortly after wet weather. Bacteria levels can increase due to rainfall and runoff. Good precautions to take include:

  • Avoid swimming right after a heavy rain
  • Avoid contact with the river downstream of a sewage outfall
  • Cover open cuts, use ear and nose plugs
  • Wash hands before eating or drinking

A water sample of South River was taken on 8/7. Sampling occurred during/right after a period of wet weather. The resulting test showed that the the water is sometimes safe for both swimming and boating. The next water sample is expected to be taken on 8/21 and its results should be posted by 8/24 on https://connecticutriver.us/it-clean
